Spring Solid Height

The Solid Height of a compression spring is the height of the spring when all of the coils are brought together (stacked) by compression (load). The following formulas are used to calculate solid height for different end configurations:

Solid Height should only be specified when it is important to the function of the spring. It should be specified as a maximum allowing the spring manufacturer to adjust as necessary while considering other requirements of the design. It is also good practice not to design the solid height such that it is used as a stop or too close to the final load height.

Other considerations when calculating solid height include finish and other manufacturing tolerances.

Please contact the Newcomb Spring facility nearest you for more information on solid height and other considerations of spring design. Newcomb Spring also offers a special technical guide on CD that includes an animated glossary and information on spring characteristics.
